Getting a Marriage License in Cook County

Both parties must appear at the Recorder's Office in person. Bring valid photo identification. A driver's license, state ID, or passport will work. The standard fee is $115. With 12 hours of approved premarital education, the fee drops to $40. You need a signed and notarized educator's statement on official letterhead from a licensed minister or therapist to qualify for the lower rate. Under Minnesota Statute 517.08, the application must include full legal names, birth dates, Social Security numbers, parents' maiden names, and prior marriage details.

If either party was married before, bring a divorce decree or death certificate. The license is valid for six months anywhere in Minnesota. No waiting period applies. You can marry the same day you get the license. Because Grand Marais is a more remote location, it is worth calling ahead at (218) 387-3661 to confirm hours and any forms you need to bring. After the ceremony, the officiant must file the signed certificate with the Cook County Recorder within five days per Minnesota Statute 517.10.
