How to Get a Marriage License in Houston County
To get a marriage license in Houston County, both parties must go to the Recorder's office in Caledonia together. Each person brings a valid government-issued photo ID. The standard fee is $115. If both parties have completed a premarital education course of at least 12 hours, the fee is $40. Bring the certificate from the program to claim the reduced rate. Payment is by cash, check, or money order.
The application requires full legal names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and both parties' parents' full maiden names. If either party was previously married, a certified copy of the divorce decree or death certificate is required. The Recorder reviews the application and issues the license on the same visit. Under Minn. Stat. section 517.08, the license is valid for six months and usable anywhere in Minnesota. Minnesota has no waiting period, so the license can be used the same day it is issued.
Two witnesses who are at least 16 years old must attend the ceremony and sign the marriage certificate. The officiant is then responsible for filing the signed certificate with the Houston County Recorder within five days under section 517.10. After the Recorder processes and records the certificate, certified copies are available for $9 each.
Online Search for Houston County Marriage Records
MOMS, or the Minnesota Official Marriage System, covers all Houston County marriage records going back to 1854. The system is free and available at moms.mn.gov. Search by the name of either party. The results will show names, the county where the license was issued, and the marriage date. It is a good first step before contacting the Recorder's office directly.
MOMS does not issue certified copies. It only lets you search and verify. To get a certified copy, you need to request it from the Houston County Recorder. You can do that in person at the Caledonia office or by mail. Call ahead to confirm what a mail request needs to include. The fee for each certified copy is $9.
For records outside the MOMS system or for detailed genealogy research, the Minnesota Historical Society has resources that may help. Their guide at libguides.mnhs.org/vital/marriage covers historical indexes and microfilm available for Houston County. The Caledonia area has a long history, and some pre-1854 records from before the county was formally established may exist in related archives or church records.
Minnesota Marriage Requirements
Houston County applies the same rules as every other Minnesota county under Chapter 517 of the Minnesota Statutes. Both parties must be at least 18 years old. Under section 517.01, close relatives by blood or adoption cannot marry. Neither party can be legally married to someone else at the time of the application.
The officiant must be legally authorized to perform marriages under section 517.04. Judges, court officials, and licensed religious leaders are among those who qualify. After the ceremony, the officiant has five days to file the signed certificate with the Recorder. The five-day window is a legal requirement. Failing to file on time can delay or complicate the official record of the marriage.
Minnesota has no waiting period for marriage licenses. Since August 2016, couples can use the license the day it is issued. The only time constraint is the six-month expiration on the license itself. If you wait too long after applying and the six months pass, you have to apply again and pay the fees a second time. Houston County, like every Minnesota county, enforces this statewide rule with no exceptions.
What Houston County Marriage Records Contain
A certified copy of a Houston County marriage certificate shows the full legal names of both parties, the date the marriage took place, the county where the license was issued, the officiant's name and authority, and the names of the two witnesses. The date the Recorder recorded the certificate appears as well. This is the document accepted by government agencies, banks, courts, and most other institutions as legal proof of marriage.
The application file on record at the Caledonia office includes more personal information. Birth dates, Social Security numbers, parents' maiden names, and prior marriage details are all in the file. That information is not printed on the certified copy you receive, but it stays in the Recorder's permanent records. Researchers interested in Houston County family history may be able to access some older application records under Minnesota public records law.
Houston County's records go back to approximately 1854. That is a deep collection for a rural southeastern Minnesota county. The Recorder maintains these records carefully, and the MOMS index makes the bulk of them searchable online.
