Marriage Licenses in Martin County

Both parties must appear in person at the Recorder's office in Fairmont. Neither person can submit the application on behalf of the other. Minnesota has no waiting period, so the license is valid the same day it is issued. You then have six months to use it anywhere in the state.

Valid government-issued photo ID is required from each applicant. A driver's license or passport works well. Social Security numbers are needed for the application but will not appear on the printed license. If either person has been married before, bring documentation that shows how the prior marriage ended. A certified divorce decree or death certificate is what the Recorder needs. Bring one for each prior marriage, not just the most recent.

All these requirements come from Minn. Stat. 517.08 and apply across Minnesota. Martin County does not have local add-ons. If both of you complete a 12-hour premarital education course from a state-approved provider, the fee drops from $115 to $40. The Recorder can give you a list of approved programs when you visit.

After the ceremony, the officiant signs and returns the license to the Martin County Recorder within five days. Two witnesses who are at least 16 must also sign. Once the Recorder receives and records the license, it becomes a permanent part of Martin County's vital records archive.

The Minnesota Official Marriage System (MOMS) is the best starting point for an online search. MOMS includes Martin County records and lets you search by name. You will see basic details when a match is found, like the names and date of the marriage. The system does not give you access to the full document.

To get a certified copy of a Martin County marriage certificate, contact the Recorder in Fairmont. You can go in person or mail a written request. Include both full names and the approximate date of the marriage. Copies cost $9.00 each. You need to state your connection to the record, as Minnesota law limits access to certified copies to those with a direct interest.

For older records, especially those from the late 1800s, the Minnesota Historical Society at libguides.mnhs.org/vital/marriage may have indexes or digitized materials. Martin County records go back to 1857, so genealogists working on older family trees often need both MOMS and the Historical Society resources.
