This page explains the process and how to search Hubbard County marriage records online through MOMS.

Getting a Marriage License in Hubbard County
Both parties must go to the Hubbard County License Center in Park Rapids together. Each person needs a valid photo ID. The fee is $115 for a standard license. If you have completed at least 12 hours of premarital education, you pay $40. Bring your premarital education certificate. The office accepts cash, check, or money order.
The application collects full legal names, birth dates, Social Security numbers, and the full maiden names of both parties' parents. If either person was previously married, bring a certified copy of the divorce decree or a death certificate to prove the prior marriage ended. The License Center processes the application and issues the license during your visit. Under Minn. Stat. section 517.08, the license is valid for six months from the date it is issued. You can use it anywhere in Minnesota, and there is no waiting period.
After the ceremony, two witnesses who are at least 16 must have been present and must have signed the certificate. The officiant signs it as well and files it with the Hubbard County License Center within five days under section 517.10. Once it is recorded, certified copies are available for $9 each. If you later need more copies, contact the License Center by phone or visit in person.
Note: If you also need birth or death records from Hubbard County, those are kept at the County Recorder's office, not the License Center.
Searching Hubbard County Marriage Records Online
MOMS is Minnesota's statewide marriage record search system and includes Hubbard County records. Go to moms.mn.gov to search by name. The system is free. It returns basic information about each matching record: party names, the county where the license was issued, and the marriage date. This lets you verify that a marriage occurred and find the right file before contacting the License Center.
MOMS is a search index only. It does not provide certified documents. If you need an official certified copy, contact the Hubbard County License Center at (218) 732-3552. Call ahead to confirm whether mail requests are accepted and what you need to include. In-person visits are processed the same day in most cases.
For older records or genealogy research, the Minnesota Historical Society has additional resources. Their guide at libguides.mnhs.org/vital/marriage explains what historical materials exist for Hubbard County. Since the county was established in 1883 from Cass County, some early records may be found in Cass County records or in the Historical Society's collections. Contact the Society for help tracking down records that predate Hubbard County's formation.
Minnesota Marriage Law in Hubbard County
Hubbard County follows Minnesota Statutes Chapter 517 for all marriage license matters. Both parties must be at least 18 years old. Under section 517.01, close relatives by blood or adoption cannot marry, and neither party can be married to someone else. The same basic requirements apply in every Minnesota county, and Hubbard is no exception.
Officiants must be legally authorized under section 517.04. Judges and licensed religious officiants are the most common categories. The officiant signs the certificate and has five days to file it with the License Center. Two witnesses, each at least 16 years old, must also sign the certificate at the ceremony. All three signatures are required for the record to be complete.
There is no waiting period in Minnesota. The license can be used as soon as it is issued. The six-month expiration is the only real time constraint. If the license expires without being used, you start the process over. Hubbard County does not offer any exceptions or extensions to the standard rules set by state law. If your wedding date is uncertain, it is better to wait to apply than to let the license expire.
What Hubbard County Marriage Records Show
A certified copy of a Hubbard County marriage certificate shows the names of both spouses, the marriage date and location, the officiant's name and authority, and the two witnesses. The date the record was officially filed with the License Center is also included. This is the document you need for legal purposes such as changing a name, updating beneficiaries, or proving marital status to a court or government agency.
The application on file at the License Center contains more information, including birth dates, Social Security numbers, parents' maiden names, and prior marriage details. That data is private and is not included in the certified copy you receive. Researchers may be able to access some of this information for older records, depending on what Minnesota public records law allows for the age of the record in question.
Hubbard County records are available back to the time the county was formed in 1883. Anything before that date would have been under Cass County, which Hubbard was carved from. If you are doing genealogy research on a family that lived in the area in the late 1800s, it may be worth checking Cass County records or Historical Society collections for the earliest years.
