Meeker County Marriage License Process

Both parties must appear together in person at the Recorder's office. You cannot apply by proxy or by mail. Minnesota law eliminated the waiting period in 2016, so the license is valid the day it is issued. You have six months from the date on the license to get married. After that, the license expires.

Each applicant needs a valid photo ID. A driver's license, state ID, or passport all work. Your Social Security number is required at the time of application but will not appear on the license. If either person was married before, you need documentation of how that marriage ended. A certified divorce decree or a certified copy of a death certificate is what you must bring. Have one ready for each prior marriage, not just the last one.

Under Minn. Stat. 517.08, these rules apply the same way in all Minnesota counties. Meeker County does not add any local requirements. The premarital education discount is available statewide. Completing a 12-hour approved course before you apply brings the fee from $115 down to $40. Ask the Recorder for a list of approved providers.

After the wedding, the officiant must sign and file the completed license with the Meeker County Recorder within five days. Two witnesses who are at least 16 must also sign the document. Once filed, the Recorder records it as a permanent entry in the county's vital records system.

The Minnesota Official Marriage System (MOMS) is the fastest way to search Meeker County marriage records online. The system includes the county and lets you search by name. When a match is found, you see basic information about the record. To get the actual document, you contact the Recorder.

Request certified copies in person at the Litchfield office or by mail. Include full names of both parties and the approximate date of the marriage. Copies cost $9.00 each. Minnesota law limits who can receive certified copies, so be ready to explain your interest in the record when you make your request.

For older records, the Minnesota Historical Society at libguides.mnhs.org/vital/marriage has genealogical indexes and microfilm collections covering Meeker County going back many decades. Comprehensive vital records from 1856 are maintained by the Meeker County Recorder.
