Getting a Marriage License in Renville County
The process starts with both applicants visiting the Renville County Recorder's Office together. Under Minnesota Statute 517.08, both parties must appear in person simultaneously. Each person presents a valid photo ID and provides their Social Security number. The standard fee is $115. If both applicants have completed at least 12 hours of premarital education from a state-approved source, the fee is $40.
Minnesota has no waiting period for marriage. Since August 2016, there is no mandatory delay between getting your license and having the ceremony. The license is valid for six months from the date it is issued. You can hold the ceremony anywhere in the state. If the license expires without being used, you have to apply again and pay a new fee.
After the ceremony, the officiant completes and signs the license. Two witnesses who are at least 16 years old must also sign. Under Statute 517.10, the signed license must be returned to the recorder's office within five days of the ceremony. Once the office records the license, it becomes the official marriage certificate. Certified copies can be ordered after that for $9 each.
What to Bring When You Apply
Coming prepared to the Renville County Recorder's Office makes the visit quick. Here is what each applicant needs to bring.
- Valid government-issued photo ID for each applicant
- Social Security number for each applicant
- Full legal names of both parents, including mother's maiden name
- If previously married: certified divorce decree or death certificate for prior spouse
- License fee in cash, check, or money order
Both applicants must be 18 or older under Minnesota Statute 517.01. Younger applicants face additional requirements. Social Security numbers are used for state reporting only and do not appear on the marriage license or certificate. Bring original documents, not photocopies. The recorder's office reviews original documents and returns them after processing.
Note: If you were born outside the United States and do not have a Social Security number, contact the recorder's office before your visit to ask what alternative ID is accepted.
