Getting a Marriage License in Mille Lacs County

Both people must appear in person together at the Recorder's office in Milaca. Mail-in or online applications are not accepted for new licenses. Minnesota has no waiting period. The license is effective the same day it is issued and stays valid for six months. After six months it expires, and you would need to apply again.

Each applicant needs a valid government-issued photo ID. A driver's license or passport both work. You must provide your Social Security number at the time of application. It is required for the record but will not be printed on the license itself. If either of you has been married before, bring proof that the previous marriage ended. A certified copy of a divorce decree or a death certificate is needed. You need one for every prior marriage, not just the most recent one.

Under Minn. Stat. 517.08, these requirements apply uniformly across all 87 Minnesota counties. Mille Lacs County does not add local rules. The premarital education option is available here as in all counties. If both applicants complete a 12-hour state-approved course before applying, the fee drops from $115 to $40. Ask the Recorder for the current list of approved providers.
