Applying for a Marriage License in Isanti County
To get a marriage license, both people must go to the Recorder's office in Cambridge together. You each need a valid government-issued photo ID. The standard license fee is $115. Couples who have completed at least 12 hours of premarital education can apply for a license at the reduced fee of $40. You must bring your premarital education certificate to qualify. The office accepts cash, check, or money order.
On the application, you provide full legal names, birth dates, Social Security numbers, and both parties' parents' full maiden names. Prior marriages matter too. If either person was previously married, you need to bring a certified divorce decree or a death certificate proving that marriage ended. The Recorder issues the license during your visit once the paperwork checks out.
Under Minn. Stat. section 517.08, the license is valid for six months from the issue date. You can use it anywhere in Minnesota during that time. There is no waiting period. You can apply and get married the same day if you want. Two witnesses who are at least 16 must be present at the ceremony and sign the marriage certificate. Under section 517.10, the officiant has five days after the ceremony to file the certificate with the Isanti County Recorder. Certified copies cost $9 each.

Marriage Requirements in Isanti County
All Isanti County marriage licenses are issued under Minnesota Statutes Chapter 517. The law is uniform across the state. Both parties must be 18 or older. Under section 517.01, close relatives cannot marry, and neither party can currently be legally married. These are hard requirements with no county-level exceptions.
Officiants must have legal authority to marry people under section 517.04. Judges, court-appointed officials, and licensed religious leaders are the most common. After the ceremony, the officiant has five days to return the signed certificate to the Isanti County Recorder. The two witnesses must also have signed it. If the certificate is not filed within five days, it can delay or complicate the official recording of the marriage.
Minnesota removed the five-day waiting period in August 2016. Before that change, there was a mandatory wait between getting the license and using it. Now you can apply and marry on the same day. The six-month expiration date is the only remaining time constraint. Licenses cannot be extended or renewed, so apply at an appropriate time relative to your planned ceremony date.
What Isanti County Marriage Records Contain
A certified copy from the Isanti County Recorder shows the full legal names of both spouses, the date and place of marriage, the officiant's name, and the names of both witnesses. The date the Recorder recorded the certificate is also shown. This is the document accepted by courts, government agencies, financial institutions, and employers when they need proof of a legal marriage.
The application file at the Recorder's office holds more detail. It includes dates of birth, Social Security numbers, parents' maiden names, and prior marriage information. None of that private data appears on the certified copy you receive. Genealogy researchers may be able to access some of this information from older records, depending on age and applicable public records law. Asking the Recorder's staff is the best way to find out what is available for a specific record.
Isanti County records go back to about 1871. Before that, Isanti County was attached to Ramsey County for governmental purposes, so researchers looking for early records may need to check there. The county has grown steadily as part of the Twin Cities metro, and the Recorder's office handles a meaningful volume of marriage records. The MOMS system covers the bulk of the historical record and makes searching easier.
