Applying for a Marriage License in Murray County

Both parties must show up at the Recorder's office in Slayton together. No proxy applications or mail-in licenses are accepted. Minnesota has no waiting period, so the license is effective the day it is issued. It stays valid for six months from the date on the license. After that it expires and you must start over.

Each applicant needs a valid government-issued photo ID. A driver's license, state ID, or passport all work. Social Security numbers are required when you apply, but they do not appear on the license. If either person was married before, bring proof that the marriage is over. A certified copy of the divorce decree or a death certificate is needed for each prior marriage. Have all documents ready before you go to the office.

Under Minn. Stat. 517.08, these rules apply in all 87 Minnesota counties. Murray County adds no local requirements. If you and your partner complete a 12-hour premarital education course from a state-approved provider, the license fee drops from $115 to $40. The Recorder can tell you which programs qualify.

After the ceremony, the officiant signs and files the completed license with the Murray County Recorder within five days. Two witnesses who are at least 16 must sign as well. Once the Recorder receives and records the license, it becomes a permanent part of the county's vital records system.

Minnesota Marriage Laws

Minnesota's marriage law is found in Chapter 517 of the Minnesota Statutes. Both parties must be 18 or older. No blood test is needed. There is no waiting period and no residency requirement. Couples from out of state can apply in Murray County as long as they plan to marry in Minnesota.
