Getting a Marriage License in Pipestone County
Both people must appear at the Pipestone County Recorder's Office together to apply for a marriage license. This is required by Minnesota Statute 517.08, which applies in every county statewide. Each applicant presents a valid photo ID and provides their Social Security number. The standard license fee is $115. Couples who complete 12 or more hours of premarital education from a state-approved provider pay $40 instead.
Minnesota has no waiting period for marriage. Since August 1, 2016, couples have been able to marry immediately after getting their license. The license stays valid for six months from the date of issue. You can hold the ceremony anywhere in the state, not just in Pipestone County. If your license expires before the ceremony, you must apply again.
After the ceremony, the officiant signs the completed license along with two witnesses who are at least 16 years old. The signed license must be returned to the recorder's office within five days of the ceremony under Statute 517.10. Once the county records it, certified copies are available.
What You Need at the Recorder's Office
Having your documents ready before you go keeps the process quick. Here is what each person applying for a license needs to bring to the Pipestone County Recorder's Office.
- Valid, government-issued photo ID for each applicant
- Social Security number for each applicant
- Both parents' full legal names, including mother's maiden name
- If previously married: final divorce decree or death certificate for prior spouse
- Payment in cash, check, or money order
Both parties must be at least 18 under Minnesota Statute 517.01. Younger applicants face additional steps before the county will issue a license. If you were born outside the United States and do not have a Social Security number, ask the recorder's office what other documentation is accepted. They are used to handling different situations and will walk you through the options.
