Marriage License Requirements

Both applicants must appear together at the Ridgedale Service Center with valid photo ID. A driver's license, passport, or state ID card all qualify. You must also give your Social Security number at the time of application. It is required by law but does not appear on the license. Under Minnesota Statute 517.08, both parties must be at least 18 years old.

If you were previously married, bring a certified copy of the divorce decree or a death certificate. The county will not process your application without proof the prior marriage ended. Bring originals or certified copies, not photocopies, to avoid problems.

Your license is valid for six months and works anywhere in Minnesota. There is no waiting period. Hennepin County provides the original license plus two souvenir copies at no extra cost. The officiant must return the completed license to Hennepin County within five days of the ceremony under Minnesota Statute 517.10.

Plymouth Marriage License Fees

The standard fee is $115. If both parties complete an approved 12-hour premarital education course, the fee drops to $40. Proof of the course must be provided at the time you apply. Expedited processing is available for an extra $20 and reduces the wait from about three weeks to roughly one week.

Certified copies of the marriage record cost $9 each. Order them at the time of application or request them later by calling Hennepin County at 612-348-8240. Copies are needed for name changes, insurance changes, and other legal purposes.
