Applying for a Marriage License in Anoka County

The fee for a marriage license in Anoka County is $125. If both parties have completed at least 12 hours of approved premarital education, the fee is $50 instead. Bring a signed, notarized educator's statement on letterhead to get that lower rate. The statement must come from a licensed minister or licensed marriage and family therapist. Under Minnesota Statute 517.08, the educator's names must match exactly what appears on the marriage application.

Anoka County has an online pre-application system. You can fill out your application through the Self-Service Web portal before your visit. You still need to go in person to sign and pay, but completing the form online in advance saves time at the counter. The county accepts cash, check, eCheck (with a $3.50 fee), and credit or debit cards with a 2.60% convenience fee.

Both people applying must show valid photo ID. Accepted forms include a driver's license, state ID, military ID, passport, or certified birth certificate. If either party was previously married, you need to bring proof the prior marriage ended. A divorce decree or death certificate is what you need.

One important note for Anoka County: felony applicants cannot use a marriage license to change their name. Under Minnesota Statute 259.13, a person with a felony conviction must follow a separate name change process through the courts. This applies to applications submitted after August 1, 2023.

Go to moms.mn.gov and select Anoka County, or search all counties at once. You can search by name, date range, or a combination. The system has three search modes: exact match works best when you know the spelling, Soundex finds similar sounds, and wildcard lets you use partial names.
