Getting a Marriage License in Mahnomen County
Both parties must appear together in person at the Recorder's office. You cannot send someone else in your place, and mail applications are not accepted for new licenses. Minnesota has no waiting period, so the license takes effect the same day it is issued. You have six months to use it before it expires.
Valid photo ID is required from each applicant. A driver's license, passport, or state-issued ID works. Social Security numbers are required at the time of application but will not appear on the license itself. If either person was married before, you must bring proof that the marriage ended. A certified copy of a divorce decree or a death certificate is what the Recorder needs. You must have one for each prior marriage, not just the most recent.
Under Minn. Stat. 517.08, all these requirements are the same across Minnesota. Mahnomen County adds no local rules. If you and your partner complete a 12-hour premarital education course from an approved provider, the fee drops from $115 to $40. The Recorder can give you a list of approved programs.
Once you marry, the officiant signs and files the license with the Mahnomen County Recorder within five days. Two witnesses who are at least 16 must also sign. The Recorder records it and keeps it as a permanent document in the county's vital records system.

To request a certified copy, go in person to the office at 311 North Main Street or send a written request by mail. Include the full names of both parties and the approximate date of the marriage. Copies are $9.00 each. Be ready to explain your relationship to the record, as Minnesota restricts certified copy access to those with a legitimate interest.
