Chapter 517 sets the uniform rules for marriage licenses, waiting periods, and certified copies across all 87 Minnesota counties, and Polk County's recorder in Crookston applies these rules to every application.

Marriage License Application

To get a marriage license in Polk County, both applicants must go to the recorder's office in Crookston in person at the same time. This is a statewide rule under Minnesota Statute 517.08. Each person provides a valid photo ID and their Social Security number. The fee is $115 for a standard license. If both applicants have completed at least 12 hours of premarital education from a state-approved provider, the fee is $40.

Minnesota has no waiting period. You can get married right after you pick up the license. The license is valid anywhere in Minnesota for six months from the date of issue. If you apply in Polk County, you are free to hold the ceremony somewhere else in the state. The choice of location for the ceremony does not affect where the license was issued or where the record is filed.

Payment is accepted in cash, check, or money order. Your Social Security numbers are used for state reporting and do not appear on the license or the certificate. If either applicant was previously married, bring the final divorce decree or a certified death certificate for the former spouse.

Come prepared to the recorder's office to avoid a second trip. Here is what each applicant must provide when applying for a marriage license in Polk County.

  • Valid government-issued photo ID
  • Social Security number
  • Both parents' full names, including mother's maiden name
  • If previously married: certified divorce decree or death certificate for prior spouse
  • License fee in cash, check, or money order

Both applicants must be at least 18 under Minnesota Statute 517.01. Younger applicants require additional steps. Two witnesses who are 16 or older must sign the license at the ceremony. The officiant also signs. The signed license must be returned to the Polk County Recorder within five days of the ceremony under Statute 517.10. Certified copies become available once the license is filed and recorded.

Note: Certified copies cost $9 each. Order at least two if you need them for multiple agencies such as Social Security, the DMV, or a passport office.
