Marriage License Application in Red Lake County

Getting a marriage license in Red Lake County follows the same process as the rest of Minnesota under Statute 517.08. Both applicants appear together at the recorder's office, present valid photo IDs, provide their Social Security numbers, and pay the fee. The standard fee is $115. If both applicants have completed at least 12 hours of premarital education from a state-approved provider, the fee drops to $40.

Minnesota eliminated the waiting period for marriage in August 2016. You can hold the ceremony right after you receive the license. The license is valid for six months anywhere in the state. You do not need to have the ceremony in Red Lake County just because you got the license there. If the six-month window passes without a ceremony, you need to reapply.

If either applicant was previously married, you need to bring the final divorce decree or a certified death certificate for the prior spouse. Both documents must be official copies, not photocopies. The recorder's office will review them and return them to you after the application is processed.

Bring these items to the Red Lake County Recorder's Office when you go to apply. Having everything ready speeds up the process and avoids a second visit.

  • Valid government-issued photo ID for each applicant
  • Social Security number for each applicant
  • Full legal names of both parents, including mother's maiden name
  • If previously married: certified divorce decree or death certificate for prior spouse
  • Payment in cash, check, or money order

Both applicants must be at least 18 under Minnesota Statute 517.01. Younger applicants need additional steps before the county issues a license. Two witnesses who are at least 16 must sign the license at the ceremony. The officiant signs as well. Under Statute 517.10, the signed license must be returned to the recorder within five days of the ceremony. Certified copies are available after the record is filed and cost $9 each.
