Where to Get a Marriage License in Edina
Edina residents can apply for a marriage license at the Hennepin County Southdale Service Center, which is inside the Southdale Center shopping area in Edina. This is a satellite office of Hennepin County and handles the same applications and fees as the main Government Center in downtown Minneapolis. Complete an online pre-application at hennepin.us before your visit. Both parties must appear together in person.
Edina City Hall handles city business but does not issue marriage licenses. The city will direct residents to Hennepin County for all marriage license applications and vital records requests. The Southdale Service Center is inside the Southdale mall off France Avenue in Edina. It is easy to reach from both Edina and nearby Bloomington, Eden Prairie, and Minneapolis. Parking is available in the mall lot. Because it is inside a shopping center, hours match the county office hours, not the mall hours, so arrive by 4:00 PM.
The City of Edina official website covers local government services, though all marriage license and vital records services are handled by Hennepin County at the Southdale Service Center inside the city.
For marriage license applications and certified copy requests, go directly to the Hennepin County Southdale Service Center at 1225 Southdale Center in Edina or call 612-348-8240.
Marriage License Requirements
Both applicants must appear in person together at the Southdale Service Center with a valid government-issued photo ID. Driver's licenses, passports, and state IDs are all acceptable. You must also provide your Social Security number at the time of application. Under Minnesota Statute 517.08, both parties must be at least 18 years old.
If either party was previously married, bring a certified copy of the divorce decree or a death certificate. Hennepin County will not process a new license without proof the prior marriage ended legally. Bring certified originals, not photocopies, to avoid a second trip.
The license is valid for six months anywhere in Minnesota. No waiting period applies. Hennepin County provides the original license plus two souvenir copies at no extra charge. This is a benefit that not all Minnesota counties offer. The officiant must return the completed license to Hennepin County within five days of the ceremony under Minnesota Statute 517.10.
Edina Marriage License Fees
Hennepin County charges $115 for a standard marriage license. If both applicants complete an approved 12-hour premarital education course, the fee is $40. Proof of the class must be shown at the time of application. Expedited processing adds $20 and cuts the processing time from about three weeks to roughly one week. Certified copies of the marriage record are $9 each.
Order certified copies at the time you apply or request them later by calling Hennepin County at 612-348-8240 or emailing license.sd@hennepin.us. Always confirm current fees before your visit since amounts can change over time.
Search Edina Marriage Records Online
Minnesota's free MOMS system at moms.mn.gov covers Hennepin County records and lets you search Edina marriage records by name at no cost. The tool returns basic information like party names and the date the license was issued. It is a useful free resource for verifying a marriage or finding a record before requesting a certified copy.
MOMS does not issue certified copies. For official copies, contact Hennepin County at 612-348-8240 or visit the Southdale Service Center. Certified copies are required for legal, financial, and government purposes including name changes and insurance updates.
For older records that predate the MOMS database, the Minnesota Historical Society at mnhs.org holds historical Hennepin County marriage records and can assist with genealogy and research requests.
