The MOMS pre-application is optional but can save time when you arrive at the service center. Both parties must still appear in person to finalize the application and pay the fee.
Marriage License Requirements
Both applicants must appear in person together at the Hennepin County service center with a valid government-issued photo ID. Driver's licenses, passports, and state IDs are all accepted. You must provide your Social Security number when you apply. Under Minnesota Statute 517.08, both parties must be at least 18 years old.
If you were previously married, bring a certified copy of the divorce decree or a death certificate showing the prior marriage ended legally. The county will not issue a new license without this. Bring certified originals, not photocopies, to avoid delays.
The license is valid for six months anywhere in Minnesota. There is no waiting period. Hennepin County provides the original plus two souvenir copies at no extra charge. Under Minnesota Statute 517.10, the officiant must return the completed license to Hennepin County within five days of the ceremony.
Eden Prairie Marriage License Fees
Hennepin County charges $115 for a standard marriage license. Couples who complete an approved 12-hour premarital education course pay $40 instead. You must show proof of the class when you apply. Expedited processing adds $20 to the fee and cuts the processing time from about three weeks to about one week. Certified copies of the marriage record cost $9 each.
Request certified copies when you apply or order them later by calling Hennepin County at 612-348-8240. Always confirm current fees before visiting since amounts can change.
