Marriage License Requirements

Both parties must show up together at the Hennepin County office with a valid photo ID. Driver's licenses, passports, and state IDs all work. You also need to provide your Social Security number at the time of application. The number is used for state records purposes but does not appear on the license itself.

Under Minnesota Statute 517.08, both applicants must be 18 or older. If you were married before, you must bring a certified copy of your divorce decree or a death certificate showing the prior marriage ended legally. The county will not issue a new license without this.

Your license is valid for six months anywhere in Minnesota. There is no waiting period after you get the license. The person performing the ceremony must be authorized under Minnesota Statute 517.04. After the wedding, the officiant returns the completed license to Hennepin County within five days. Hennepin County provides the original license plus two souvenir copies at no extra charge.

Bloomington Marriage License Fees

Hennepin County charges $115 for a standard marriage license. If both parties complete an approved 12-hour premarital education course, the fee is reduced to $40. Proof of the course must be presented at the time of application. Expedited processing is available for an extra $20 and cuts the standard processing time from about three weeks to about one week.

Certified copies of the marriage record cost $9 each. You can request copies at the time you apply or order them later through the Hennepin County Vital Records office. Call 612-348-8240 or visit in person to request copies.
