Marriage License Requirements
Both parties must appear in person at the Washington County Government Center with a valid government-issued photo ID. A driver's license, passport, or state ID card is accepted. You must provide your Social Security number at the time of application. Under Minnesota Statute 517.08, both applicants must be at least 18 years old.
If you were previously married, bring a certified copy of the divorce decree or a death certificate. Washington County will not issue a license without proof that the prior marriage legally ended. Bring originals or certified copies, not photocopies, to avoid delays.
The license is valid for six months anywhere in Minnesota. There is no waiting period after it is issued. The officiant who performs the ceremony must return the completed license to the county within five days under Minnesota Statute 517.10.
Woodbury Marriage License Fees
Washington County charges $115 for a standard marriage license. Couples who complete an approved 12-hour premarital education course pay $40. You must provide proof of the class when you apply. The reduced fee does not apply retroactively.
Certified copies of marriage records are $9 per copy. You can request copies when you apply or order them later by contacting the Washington County Vital Records office at 651-430-6175. Certified copies are needed for name changes, insurance, and other legal purposes.
