Marriage License Requirements

Both applicants must appear in person at a Dakota County service center with valid photo ID. Driver's licenses, passports, and state IDs are all accepted. Your Social Security number is required at the time of application. Under Minnesota Statute 517.08, both parties must be at least 18 years old.

If either person was previously married, bring a certified copy of the divorce decree or a death certificate. Dakota County will not issue a new license without this documentation. Bring original certified documents, not photocopies.

The license is valid for six months from the date issued and works anywhere in Minnesota. There is no waiting period. The person performing the ceremony must be authorized under Minnesota Statute 517.04. The officiant must return the completed license to Dakota County within five days of the ceremony under Minnesota Statute 517.10.

Burnsville Marriage License Fees

Dakota County charges $125 for a standard marriage license. If both applicants complete an approved 12-hour premarital education course, the fee drops to $50. Proof of the class must be provided at the time of application. Certified copies of the marriage record cost $9 per copy.
