Where to Get a Marriage License in Lakeville
Lakeville residents have the advantage of a Dakota County license center right in the city. The Lakeville License Center at Heritage Drive handles marriage license applications and is one of several Dakota County service locations. You must complete an online application first at moms.mn.gov before coming in to sign and pay in person. Both applicants must appear together.
A second option is the Dakota County Administration Center in Hastings, though the Lakeville location is much more convenient for most residents. The Lakeville City Clerk is at 20195 Holyoke Avenue, phone 952-985-4403. The city clerk does not issue marriage licenses and will direct you to Dakota County.

Marriage License Requirements
Both parties must appear together at the Lakeville License Center or another Dakota County office. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID such as a driver's license, passport, or state ID. You must also provide your Social Security number when you apply. Under Minnesota Statute 517.08, both applicants must be at least 18 years old.
If you were previously married, bring a certified copy of the final divorce decree or a death certificate showing the previous marriage ended. Dakota County will not issue a new license without this documentation. Bring originals or certified copies, not photocopies.
Your license is valid for six months from the issue date and can be used anywhere in Minnesota. There is no waiting period. The person performing the ceremony must be authorized under Minnesota Statute 517.04. The officiant must return the completed license to Dakota County within five days of the ceremony per Minnesota Statute 517.10.
Lakeville Marriage License Fees
Dakota County charges $125 for a standard marriage license, which is slightly higher than some other Minnesota counties. If both applicants complete an approved 12-hour premarital education course, the fee drops to $50. Proof of the class must be presented when you apply. Certified copies of marriage records cost $9 per copy.
You can request copies at the time you pick up the license or order them later. Contact the Dakota County Recorder at 651-554-6531 or email nscservicedesk@co.dakota.mn.us for copy requests. Call ahead to confirm current fees before your visit.
