Marriage License Requirements

Both applicants must appear in person together at a Dakota County service center with a valid government-issued photo ID. Driver's licenses, passports, and state IDs are all accepted. You must provide your Social Security number when you apply. Under Minnesota Statute 517.08, both parties must be at least 18 years old.

If you were previously married, bring a certified copy of the final divorce decree or a death certificate showing the marriage legally ended. The county will not issue a new license without this proof. Bring certified originals, not photocopies, to avoid delays.

The license is valid for six months anywhere in Minnesota. No waiting period applies. The officiant must be authorized under Minnesota Statute 517.04. After the wedding, the officiant must return the completed license to Dakota County within five days under Minnesota Statute 517.10.
